Managing Your Time

Jeff Kikel

New Year Resolution....Time Management?!

You should begin by creating blocks in your schedule. It's that simple!

Planning and following a routine makes a huge difference in how you feel and what gets done. Here are some of the things that you may find helpful:

  • Create a routine: Block times for specific activities & turn your calendar into a bunch of blocks. Whatever is not planned, you don't do. If you want free time, plan it.
  • Group meetings & calls: Block times for meetings and returning calls. Only schedule meetings during your available times. Make your return calls in the morning and in the afternoon.

  • Optimize time for different meeting types: Here are the types of meetings you might want to book: 30-minute meeting in the office to get to know someone or catch up, 45-minute meeting outside of the office, 10-minute call to help someone who needs advice, 30-minute weekly staff meeting.

  • Use appointment slots and only book what is available.

  • Block time for email: You must avoid doing email all the time. To do that you need to schedule the time to do your email.

  • Plan your exercise and family time: Unless you put it on the calendar, it won't get done. That also applies to your health and family time. Train yourself to promptly unplug!

You will find yourself less overwhelmed and less stressed if you take ownership of your calendar. You will be more productive!
