Happy New Year - The 10 Best Books I Read This Year

Jeff Kikel

Put these on your Reading List For Next Year...

2019 was a pretty amazing year! We had one of the best years in the stock market. The economy is humming. We had a President impeached. Plus, business experienced serious growth personally as well as anecdotally from friends. I hope all of you experienced this as well.

I set a goal at the beginning of the year to read at least 45 books this year. This number came from a statistic that I had read in Fast Company magazine, that the average CEO reads between 4-5 books per month. When I counted everything up this year I realized that I had read 52 books this year. I am currently in the middle of 4 books right now. I keep them stationed around the house and read small bits of them each day. I am not sure if I will get done with them before midnight, so they may transfer over to 2020.

The other major goal that I had set for 2019 was to publish at least 2 books this year. I actually crushed that goal by publishing 4 books this year (although technically two are waiting to be published by Amazon). The fun part was that I was able to collaborate with a couple of friends on these projects, including Gary Kasper and my business partner Eric Boyce.

Out of the 52 books that I read this year, I wanted to share with you my top 10 books. These books are a selection of goal planning, sales, marketing, digital marketing, human resources, business systems, content planning, and email marketing. I recommend that you add these to your library for this year which should get your started on your 4-5 books per month as a CEO...

10. Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation Rock the World with OKRs by John Doerr

This book was possibly the most important that I read this year. The concept of OKR's is what I believe is the single most important reason that many of today's most successful companies like Google have rocketed to success. The only reason this one does not rank higher on the list is that it came into the library late in the year and I am just now implementing the techniques into my businesses and personal planning. Finally the death of SMART goals!

(From Amazon)
Legendary venture capitalist John Doerr reveals how the goal-setting system of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) has helped tech giants from Intel to Google achieve explosive growth—and how it can help any organization thrive.

In the fall of 1999, John Doerr met with the founders of a start-up whom he'd just given $12.5 million, the biggest investment of his career. Larry Page and Sergey Brin had amazing technology, entrepreneurial energy, and sky-high ambitions, but no real business plan. For Google to change the world (or even to survive), Page and Brin had to learn how to make tough choices on priorities while keeping their team on track. They'd have to know when to pull the plug on losing propositions, to fail fast. And they needed timely, relevant data to track their progress—to measure what mattered.

Doerr taught them about a proven approach to operating excellence: Objectives and Key Results. He had first discovered OKRs in the 1970s as an engineer at Intel, where the legendary Andy Grove ("the greatest manager of his or any era") drove the best-run company Doerr had ever seen. Later, as a venture capitalist, Doerr shared Grove's brainchild with more than fifty companies. Wherever the process was faithfully practiced, it worked.

In this goal-setting system, objectives define what we seek to achieve; key results are how those top-priority goals will be attained with specific, measurable actions within a set time frame. Everyone's goals, from entry level to CEO, are transparent to the entire organization.

The benefits are profound. OKRs surface an organization's most important work. They focus effort and foster coordination. They keep employees on track. They link objectives across silos to unify and strengthen the entire company. Along the way, OKRs enhance workplace satisfaction and boost retention.

In Measure What Matters, Doerr shares a broad range of first-person, behind-the-scenes case studies, with narrators including Bono and Bill Gates, to demonstrate the focus, agility, and explosive growth that OKRs have spurred at so many great organizations. This book will help a new generation of leaders capture the same magic.

9. Fanatical Prospecting by Jeb Blount
I have been in sales for most of my adult life. This was one of the best prospecting books that I have read and is my top sales pick for the year. Jeb has a great way of calling you on all your B.S. when it comes to sales and prospecting (and not in a Glengarry Glen Ross) way. If you are responsible for sales in your business (hint: We all are), you need to apply the techniques that Jeb lays out in this book. The best sales/prospecting book that I read this year.

(From Amazon)

4. People Power: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Managing Human Capital by Scholley Bubenik

From the initial job posting to assessing the candidates, making an offer and, finally, integrating the new employee into your business, Bubenik helps you avoid the massive mistake of hiring the wrong person, a mistake that can cost you time and money, as well as negatively impact your business results.
