Matt never expected to be working for himself. One day, while struggling with the frustrations of a typical work day, his wife suggested to him that “If you can’t find the perfect job, you might have to create it.” And that’s exactly what Powell’s done with Powell Strategics.
Powell Strategics specializes in profit work (case studies, etc.) and perception work such as public relations, public affairs, crisis, communications, and problem solving. Matt’s business typically works with medium sized employers but has recently taken on some larger companies, associations, and public sector works.
The principal of Powell Strategics would advise new entrepreneurs not to hesitate to bring in help early on and to recognize your own personal responsibility in your business. Matt shares a story of how he’d only been in business for two weeks when he noticed that the waste basket was full. He thought, “someone needs to take the trash out,” and realized that someone was him. This experience helped to instill the DIY entrepreneurial attitude in Matt that he encourages all new enterprisers to assume.
Currently, Powell Strategics is in its “growth stage.” Matt is working on collaborating and being more productive through co-working.
1,) If Matt woke up one morning and his business was gone he’d get back into contact with current clients and ask, “Can we continue to work together?” He would continue doing what he's doing, but would grow faster rather than playing it so safe.
2.) Powell says his biggest entrepreneurial mistake was not growing fast enough and making excuses not to start a business.
3.)He recommends the book On the Road (Jack Kerouac, 1958). Buy it at:
4.)As a tool to help your business grow, Matt would advise using devices that connect to one another such as products equip with iCloud. This helps to sync notes and provide constant updates. Learn more at https://www.icloud.com/
