First off, let me state that the general belief that people of my generation (Gen X) and those that came before me is wrong. The millennial generation is not lazy. Your generation is rapidly changing the world and you should be proud of that.
Five Millennial Changes to the World...
A challenge that I do see…
I have seen a few trends that concern me when doing business with my millennial friends. The biggest of these is the use of business cards.
I recently met with a successful millennial businessman (or at least he thought he was). At the end of our meeting when I handed him my business card, he handed me his phone and asked me to type in my name and number. I promptly pushed his phone back to him and grabbed my card, meeting over. We were not on a date in a bar.
It may seem silly that in this world of high technology that we are still exchanging paper business cards. However, there is benefit to the tactile feel of the business card exchange process. Exchanging cards and shaking hands is part of the ritual of business that we should not forget. There are a couple of electronic cards that I have been testing as a backup for my paper business cards. Email me at Jeff@T-Werx.com and I will send you a new one that can even include video in the card.
My final reason for stressing the importance of having this simple piece of advertising material is that other cultures, especially Asian cultures, place a reverence on the business card.
For years, I did business with the Japanese in the brokerage industry. In Japan, the process of business card exchange, called Meishi, is a highly ritualized process. You always hand and receive a business card with both hands. When receiving a business card, a Japanese business person will always pause and read the card. The businessman will then place your card in a special case that they carry (not carelessly stuff it in their pocket).
In closing, I want to thank you for what you have done to change the world. Do us all a favor and spend the $25 on Vistaprint to get a box of cards. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our card with you in future.
